The Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars Program is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for individuals who would not normally receive traditional academic scholarships and whose personal commitment and financial circumstances would preclude their attendance without substantial, long-term scholarship support. The three program areas include:
- adults, ages 25 or older, with dependents in their household;
- college-age youths and adults with physical disabilities; and
- young adults, 18–25 years old, who have been deeply involved in the child welfare (foster care) system and are responsible for their own financial support.
The scholarship provides up to six years of support, including in-state tuition and fees, books and supplies, tutoring, and coordinated activities and programs. In addition, an annual living allowance of $2,750 is provided to help with expenses such as childcare, health insurance, housing, and transportation. Each fall new scholars are required to enroll in an ASU university introduction course as a cohort. In addition, the newest Scholars enroll in a spring semester course, selected jointly with program staff, which by design will provide experience in writing papers, analytical thought and comprehensive study of a social issue.
The Nina Scholars Advisory Council provides additional guidance for program structure and development. The council is comprised of members from the community (Governor's office of Youth Development, Child Protective Services, A New Leaf -formerly Prehab of Arizona, and City of Tempe Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Program), ASU faculty, staff, and deans of the College of Public Programs and Student Life, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust personnel, a Nina Scholar student representative, and the Nina Scholar coordinators and directors for both the ASU and Maricopa County Community College District.
The ASU College of Public Programs provides stewardship for the Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program funded by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust.
